MORE NEW Tau pictures

I just got sent these pictures ENJOY!

Global Domination - Track Your WAAC

Hey everyone,

I have played 40K for the last ten years with the same group for four friends, we all re-joined the hobby during 4th edition and have all continued to play through 5th and now we are all getting to grips with 6th edition.

We played a great many games in 4th edition but during 5th we all started to settle down and life started to get in the way of our regular 40K games.

5th Edition started well and we did seem to get on well with it but about a year before 6th edition most of us started to become very tired of what 5th edition had become, we had been given this new edition and told to just get on with it.  For nearly five years GW had offered no support or solutions to rules conflicts and never even expanded on the three basic book missions.  The standard book missions were just not fun any more and we all started to become a little too WAAC in our play styles with many games breaking out into rules arguments.

We all started to feel a little disenfranchised by the hobby we had always held in such high regard, we spent more time reminiscing about the good old days during 2nd edition as the current game was lacking in whatever that special something was that the very early editions provided.  I started to get into 40K podcasts and eventually I became aware that some of the tournaments had started using all three of the basic book missions combined rolling to see which would act as primary, secondary and tertiary and rewarding battle points, we tried this for a while and games did become more unlikely to end in a frustrating draw but there was still something missing.

Soon after I stumbled  across  the 40K Fight Club Mission Book at www.40kfightclub.com and after sending it out to my gaming group it was decided that we would use it until GW came up with something better.

In my opinion the mood of the games changed almost as soon as these new missions were introduced as we started getting caught up in the scenarios and started playing to the multiple missions within each of the twelve scenarios rather than just spending the whole game mercilessly beating each other forces to a pulp.  I started to see a shift in everyone’s army lists, we started to use more well-rounded forces that could deal with any missions or opponents that might pop up rather than running the maths and only taking units that would achieve an absolute result.  I started finding that units I had not used in years had become useful again and thus started finding their way back onto the table top helping reducing the SPAM approach that had previously been required.

Unbenounced to us we had started to do something that would later become the biggest shift leading into 6th, a phrase that would become synonymous with this new edition, we were in fact "forging the narrative”....................

So on to my reason for writing all of this, if you are a regular visitor to my humble blog you might have spotted the item pictured below in the background of most of the pictures I have posted and may have wondered what the hell is that?

Well I wanted to come up with a method of tracking who was dominating our little meta-game, but what I defiantly did not want was a list that for some would serve as a self-aggrandising display of their tactical prowess while for other nothing more than a reminder of their failures and defeats.  After a little searching online I found a picture of the Realm Of Battle campaign tiles, I printed it out and divided up the hexagonal territories between the four of us adding a simple colour coded key and stuck it on my notice board behind my workbench and added the corresponding coloured pins, I then took a picture and emailed it to all the players.

We now had a visual record of the territories that we each held going forward into 2013, each game played and won would allow you to claim a territory that boarded your own and attacks launched form the space ports could claim territories anywhere on the map like in the PC game Dawn Of War.  So far this seems to have gone down well and every time a new game is played out I get sent an email showing me which territories need exchanging and then I send out an updated image.

The players names have been obscured to protect the innocent :)

So on this map yours truly is represented by the Yellow pins and while it might not look like much has been going on believe me when I tell you that me and Red have been pushing back a forth for months now via Zone Mortalis and the occasional full sized game, Red and Green now live in the same house so there has been some movement there while Blue not so much.

The game should be competitive otherwise you are never going to learn anything but it should never become so stressful that you forget that it's just a game of toy soldiers to be enjoyed between friends over a few beers and snacks.  6th edition has brought us some very interesting and different missions that I don’t see getting boring any time soon, in fact I don't think I have played all 6 yet and out of all the games I have played in 6th only one was a draw and that’s good as a clear winner is better in my opinion.

The mixture of main narrative objectives with the three secondary’s thrown in works really well and so long as you remember to also play to those secondary’s you can’t go far wrong.  Some people say that if you get 1st blood you have most games are in the bag but that’s not even close to being true, sure 1st blood is with the exception of victory points earned via kill points the only objective that can’t be taken from you once you have, and with that in mind it is a powerful thing to achieve in any game and will often acts as a tie breaker but it does not guarantee victory.

So to sum up the game has almost come full circle and we are now being bombarded with new releases every month so there has never been a better time to be a 40K player so next time you find yourself about to lock horns with an opponent over some small rules issue just roll a dice to decide the outcome and email the following address Gamefaqs@gwplc.com so GW can clear it up and move on.

Ask yourself what would Jervis say?.........Jervis would say “SHUT UP AND FORGE THAT NARRATIVE!” :P

Later peeps and have a happy Easter.

Workbench Progress - Space Wolves Drop Pod

Hey everyone, I see that my Tau posts have taken some serious hits and have acted as a distraction so I can get some hobby progress done.  I managed to finish my 1st Space Wolves Drop Pod last night, I still want to add some re-entry burns and weathering but I will wait until all 5 Pods are finished so I can do all the weathering at once for continuity purposes.

Like my Stormraven I started by airbrushing the main chapter colour on while the parts were still on the frames using Fenrisian Grey, I already have some blue Space Marines so I did not want to go with the blue/grey of The Fang or Russ Grey.

My desk looks very tidy

I then clipped off all the bits and cleaned up the joins and painted all the details.

I was one or two bits away from completing the build and one of the square bits that acts as a sort of key stone between the pilons pinged off, I figured it had just fallen off my desk so as my desk and the room were tidy I would have no trouble finding it.................how wrong I was.  I took that room apart looking for that one bit for about an hour. Finally I figure to hell with it and by this time a mate of mine was over wanting a game of 40K so we had our game and as I was packing up many hours later I found that bit stuck to me............DOH!!!!!

I think the paint job came out nice and sharp, very new looking but the weathering will put an end to that.

As my list has so many Drop Pods and they generally sit on the table all game I really wanted them to look cool and I think I have managed that.

Well that one down 4 more to go, the other 4 are built with their interiors already painted as they were pre Badger airbrush, I have now added the chapter colours externally so its just the metalwork and detail left on them so It wont take me long.

Well there we have it, all this Tau stuff is great but I am nearly finished painting my first of 5 Drop Pods and I plan to have another Dreadfleet ship finished before the weekend so keep an eye out for those posts.

Massive Narrative Game - Imperial Forces

Hi everyone, no more Tau pictures yet so I figured I would get out the last of the pictures from the big game last month.  I used my Crimson Fist Space Marines and Imperial Guard Veterans, I did not write myself any narrative missions and instead decided to play to the main battlefield objectives while helping enable the other players on both sides achieve their missions.

Crimson Fist Space Marines

Stormraven:
Librarian x1- Mastery Level 2, Force Sword, Terminator Armour and Storm Shield
Assault Terminators x5 - Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield
Dreadnought - Plasma Cannon, Heavy Flamer (forgot to deploy him)
Thunderhawk:
Tactical Squad x10 - Power Sword, Plasma Gun, Heavy Bolter
Tactical Squad x10 - Power Sword, Plasma Gun, Heavy Bolter
Tactical Squad x10 - Power Sword, Plasma Gun, Heavy Bolter

This force would deploy from the Thunderhawk and Stormraven, the stormraven would remain docked unlit what time I needed to abandon the assault on the station and return to the battle on the surface, the Stormraven was later joined by a Storm Talon Gunship escort.  The Thunderhawk would not take part in the game but there was an exception to this rule.  If on the main table it looked like things were getting so crowded that someone was unable to deploy a key formation or a unit combination had become broken I would send the Thunderhawk on an attack run to restore balance via the medium of the emperor's wrath.

It turned out that I did need to use the Thunderhawk to help destroy the Traitors Super Heavy and clear the Eldar Warp Gate of enemy infantry, while I swooped it across the table a mate of mine played flight of the valkyries on his phone.

My Marines were gunning for the station objective while at the same time acting as a massive distraction to the Chaos Marines to help our Dark Eldar player complete his missions. Eventually I could not hold out long enough for the Dark Eldar player to get his act together so I implemented a fighting retreat back to the docking bay.  A full Tactical Squads then embarked on the Stormraven and along with the Storm Talon set cause for the main table.

The Tactical Squad deployed using the skies of blood special rule landing right on target next to the Eldar Warp Gate while the Stromraven and Storm Talon went on the hunt for enemy flyers.
The Crimson Fists will deploy from their flyer transports that are docked at the station.

It's worth mentioning that I totally forgot to deploy my Plasma Cannon Dreadnought and he played no part in the entire day............fog of war :(

The Crimson Fists will deploy from their flyer transports that are docked at the station.

Three ten man Tactical Squad deploy from the Thunderhawk and then five Assault Terminators and a Librarian in Terminator Armour with a Storm Shield deploy from the Storm Raven minus Dreadnought.
This picture looks wicked and can be seen on my Flickr feed.

The Chaos Marine forces move to cut off my escape from the docking bay.

By the games end only a hand full on Marines remained on the Mortalis table to secure the docking bay, a further full squad returned to the main table in the Stormraven.

Imperial Guard

Aegis Line - Quad-Gun
Company Command Squad - Lascannon
Commissar Lord - Power Fist
Marbo
Veteran Squad -
Lascannon, Flamer
Veteran Squad - Lascannon, Flamer
Veteran Squad - Lascannon, Flamer
Veteran Squad - Lascannon, Flamer
Veteran Squad - Lascannon, Flamer
Veteran Squad - Lascannon, Flamer
Vendetta Gunship
Rough Riders
Hellhound -
Multi Melta
Leman Russ Squadron - Lascannon.
Manticore - Heavy Flamer
Hydra Flakk - Heavy Flamer
Shadowsword - Hull Heavy Bolter

My imperial Guard were the first line of defence and spread their units across the full 6 foot width of the main table, it was their job to draw as much blood as possible during the opening bombardment and then hold the line while their allies launcher surgical strikes.

Now its worth mentioning that part one of that plan worked really well and during the 1st turn my Guard managed to kill about 100 enemy models and then about 50 on turn two.  So things were looking good, I weathered some fire and my Eldar and Grey Knight allies weighed in causing all sorts of trouble, the only Grey knight units on the table at this point were a Rifleman Dread and some Interceptors.

The bulk of the Grey Knight army and I use the word bulk very loosely consisted of 10 Terminators embarked across two Stormraven Gunships which did not arrive until maybe turn three.  The Imperial forces fought hard and kept racking up the kills safe in the knowledge that the Grey Knights would soon arrive and take the fight to the enemy.  When the Stormravens finally arrived I was off having a turn on the Mortalis table and could not really see what was going on or offer any advice, but I hear that the skies were not yet under our control and several enemy Vendetta's were in the area.  The Grey Knight player decided to zoom his Stormravens into a hot LZ (landing zone) rather than having them instead act as skimmers and boosting for a 4++ jink save, they were subsequently shot down with a lose of all hands....................................the Grey Knight reinforcements were down and out, I later heard this was the reason for our Eldar player shouting BROKEN ARROW! across the room at me.

When I returned my focus tot he main table the mood was glum, we continued to fight as hard as we could through to the end of turn 5 maybe 6 but without the reinforcements our right flank was overrun and the battle lost for the imperial forces and their allies.

On the plus side I am now writing a sequel game :)

The Imperial Guard Leman Russ Squadron might look deadly but They did not seem to last very long due to overwhelming enemy fire.

This Vendetta managed 3 strafing runs and each time it killed more than its points worth in confirmed armour kills.

My Infantry were all veterans and held a solid front line the full width of the battlefield and it was not until the final few turns that anyone actually broke through my lines.

The Cadian Mounties are ready for launching a counter attack.

This Hellhound lasted longer than it ever has before and managed to burn about 35 guardsmen before it was finally destroyed.

Look a Dreadknight, proof that the Grey Knights were there on the day.

The 2nd sighting oh the Grey Knights.

The Manticore was worth it's weight in solid gold and managed to get 3 of its 4 missiles off before its position was overrun.

So thats the last of the big game reports, you all have a good weekend and I will post back if any interesting 40K news comes to light.

Dreadfleet - Flaming Scimitar

Hello internet readers, I have been riding on the back of the leaked Tau picture this week while I have been working on a few things, one of those things was the Flaming Scimitar.   I needed this ship finished ready for the 3rd book mission along with the Black Kraken and Grimnirs Thunder so they will be painted next.

I Started with the sails so I could get them out of the way early, they were given a white undercoat followed by a basecoat of Kislev Flesh I then worked on the rasied details with a fine detail brush until finished.  I then painted the masts in Mournfang Brown and the flag in Kislev Flesh.  Once everything was dry I added a Seraphim Sepia shade and called it a day.

I painted the flaming elemental in Averland Sun followed by a coat of Bloodletter glaze, I then drybrushed on a a little more Averland Sun and finished it all off with a layer of gloss varnish.

The air elemental was given a white undercoat, I then worked in a little shading using Fenrisian Grey followed by a drybrush layer of Ceramite White.

The main hull was mostly done using Mournfang Brown for the decking, Balthasa Gold for virtually everything else and then Maggaroth Purple highlighted with Xereus Purple.  I added a shade layer of Agrax Earthshade to the gold and brown areas then when everything was dry I added a small amount of highlighting to the gold using Gehenna's Gold and Ironbreaker.

The base was first painted in Macragge Blue, then I dry brushed in Altdorf Guard Blue followed by Calgar Blue and finally a very light drybrushing of White Scar.  The whole base was now washed in a shade mix of equal parts Nuln Oil, Drakenhof Nightshade and Biel-Tan Green and then given a coat of gloss varnish once it was all dry.

I am starting to get my Space Wolves army painted while i work on the Dreadfleet ships so you can expect to see the work in progress picture as I go, I am starting by getting all my drop pods finished first so check back soon.

If anymore leaked pictures turn up I will post them for all you Fish-boy fans to see.

Later peeps.

Tau - More Leaked Pictures

Here are some great pictures I just found at Faeit 212 that are clearly from the next issue of White Dwarf.

Enjoy!

I was not sure about the flyers at first but seeing them from above changes everything, I really like the WW2 style silhouette.

Leaked Tau Pictures

Hello everyone, A whole week earlier than I expected Tau pictures are leaking all over the web so I figured I would jump on that band wagon.

Welcome the new battle suit classification: Riptide, man this thing looks massive dwarfing event he mighty Dreadknight.  I am not a fan of the Tau in general but I look forward to seeing this new model in the flesh as it's very different to anything GW have released before.  Are we going to see more large scale models like this? well I for one hope so, the flyers look a bit strange in that they are a little more like a devilfish with wings for my liking but I will reserve final judgement until I see them in person.

I will post more pictures as they become availible but the flood games seem to be open in addvance of this months White Dwarf.

If like me you love big robots and big monsters you will love big robots Vs big monsters in this summers movie Pacific Rim if we also see a new Tyranid codex this year we could be seeing something similar acted out on the table top.

Any-who more news soon.

Friday Mashup

Good day everyone, so it's Friday at last and the weekend is only hours away which can only be a good thing.  Today's post will be a bit of a mashup of what I have been working on since Wednesday and what I have been reading online regarding news and rumours this week and anything else that has popped up on my auspex.

First of all let’s see what I have been working on, my Imperial Guard army is comprised entirely of veterans as I demand BS4 in order to get anything done and for an extra 20pts per unit I think it is worth it, sure I don't have the flexibility of the platoons but it’s a sacrifice I have lived with for many years now.

Many of you do extremely well with a normal Guardsmen BS3 but I  rely on actually being able to shoot straight, normal Guard armies take three of everything in order to get any one job done as one unit will die the second will miss the target and the third will do the business.

I have never really used Grenade Launchers, I know they are considered a main stay for a Guard army but I have just never really gotten into them, but times change and I spent Wednesday evening pulling the arms off 8 spare Guardsmen’s I had in the loft and sticking some eBay'ed Grenade Launchers on them.

Four will go in each of my two Company Command Squads.

Not to deviate from the Guard topic for a few more minutes I have been invited to a few smaller points multi players games so I wont really have the points to blow on toys for my units so I needed to get another 6 riflemen painted up again from the spares just in case I need to drop my special weapon guys.

I know vets can take three special weapons per unit as well as a heavy weapon but I rarely have the points for such over indulgences.  My Veterans are mostly used as ablative wounds for a Lascannon but with the 6th Edition changes to rapid fire accurate Lasguns are now more effective, so Thursday evening was mostly spent finishing painting 6 more Guardsman’s, they were already green with their bases done so it did not take me long.

If you take a look at my Guard Army on Parade post you can get an idea of what I run in a 2K force, there are people that I know who say Veterans should be dropped or moved out of troops in the next codex but I hope they stay just the way they are.

Now for a change of flavour, I have been looking for some allies to join an Imperial Guard force of roughly 1500pts so I decided to get a "small allied contingent" of Dark Angels.

I was given the opportunity to get my hands on some Dark Angels from the Dark Vengeance starter set so I bought a copy of the codex and went to work choosing what I wanted.  What I needed was some more scoring units that could remain static for the most part and lend some serious anti infantry fire while at the same time bring a little more backbone than the Guard if the enemy got all up in my face.

I went with the following:

Librarian - Bolt Pistol, Force Sword, Psychic Hood, Power Armour
Command Squad - Plasma Gun x2, Banner of Devastation
Tactical Squad - Boltguns x9, Plasma Gun x1
Tactical Squad - Boltguns x9, Plasma Gun x1

I had these guys built (not glued or cleaned up) about 30mins after I finished the Guard riflemen, these Marines are so cool I would like to see all Marines snap fit.

In an ideal world I would go online and order a unit of Marines then click customise, then like on the Domino's site I would pick my topping/chapter markings, they would then be produced packaged and shipped to me at an inflated cost.

News

So the rumour mill is alive with the news that Tau are to be the next race to get a 6th Edition codex followed closely by Eldar.  We are now also seeing information about Orks coming after Eldar and that Imperial Guard and Tyranids may also be in the play testing phases along with Chaos Space Marines.

I think we will see Tyranids after Orks but imo Imperial Guard are involved with all the play testing purely because Imperial Guard are a very popular allied force and could become even more so if Tyranids get Genestealer cults in the form of Guard allies.

As for Chaos Space Marines they are the first true 6th edition codex against which all other should be judged to ensure balance moving forwards.

I expect to see leaked pictures from this months White Dwarf start to surface some time during the week commencing March 25th and though I have less than no interest in these fishboyz I would at least like to see a few shiny new models.

Coincidence? I think not, good old Black Library throwing out a runour confirmation via the medium of a book release :)

After enjoying Battle Of The Fang and then meeting its author Chris Wraight in person and finding him to be a thoroughly agreeable fellow I was very glad to see that he has returned to Fenris to tell another tale about everyone’s favourite space Vikings in Blood Of Asaheim.  I bought it for my Kindle in Ebook format and will get right into it once I have finished Betrayer, seriously though Battle Of The Fang is a wicked read.

Right then y'all have a good weekend and I will post again next week.

if anyone has a any news or would like me to link too or mention their blog or site please email me on gwotaz@yahoo.co.uk

Hyperios Air Defence Platforms

Good day to you all, as planned I made one last big push to finish my Birthday Hyperios Air Defence Platforms, they really just needed their shades and weathering adding so one episode of the The Following and Criminal Minds later they were done.

I first gave them an undercoat of black and then used my old Airbrush a base them in Macragge Blue.

I then Added the metal detail using Leadbelcher and Bathlasar Gold.

I used Mephiston Red as a base for the missiles and blacked out the targeting sensors and added a gloss varnish to them.

The shades were then added using Agrax Eathshade on the blue gold and red areas and then Nuln Oil over the gun metal.

Once all the shades had dried I sponged a 50/50 mix of Rhinox Hide and Abaddon Black on to the edges of the blue.

Finally I added some Leadbelcher to the weathering and the rivets and blasted them all with matt varnish, oh and then re-glossed the targeting sensors.  With regards to spray varnishing I have always had issues with using it outside as the temperature and humidity is such a problem but indoor spraying is now possible with my portable spray booth.

I look forward to shooting down some flyers in my opponents turn so my Stormraven and Talon have a better chance of shooting stuff up.

Well that's all for today folks.
